Myth: EMDR is only for “Big T” traumas

In trauma work we refer to “Big T” and “little t” traumas. Big Ts are experiences when our physical safety or survival is endangered, or we witness someone else’s being threatened (like experiencing or witnessing abuse, assault, major accidents, death or injury).

“Little ts” are distressing, but not life threatening events that overwhelm us and negatively impact our ability to cope. Little ts are typically the cumulative result of many distressing experiences over time.

People often discount their little t trauma, though it may be what is causing their generalized anxiety, depression, chronic anger, poor self image, low self worth, or pessimism.

While EMDR is most famously known for its use in treating Big T life events, it is also a highly effective intervention for damage done by little t experience. Processing little t experiences with EMDR can result in a more harmonious, peaceful life experience.
